Probiotics found to reverse the progression of coeliac disease

A study carried out by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and Paris Diderot University, Sorbonne Cité, Paris, France, on three generations of mice, has found that oral probiotics can reverse the development of coeliac disease.

The mice were fed a gluten-free diet, and then given a gluten challenge, which induced inflammation of their bowels. The introduction of oral antibiotics improved symptoms, leading the researchers to conclude that the use of probiotics can be a new therapeutic approach to coeliac disease.
