Biocare Bio-Acidophilus - freefrom probiotics

Micki Rose says:

Probiotics are the cornerstone of any allergy treatment protocol because of the effect they have on the gut, absorption, barrier strength and immunity. It's a very complex area and I could write reams. The trick is to get good quality, allergen-free ones and take enough – much of the stuff on the market is already dead before you take it, is far too low dose (anything in millions, leave well alone) and is grown on allergen substrates. There is much exciting research going on about which strains are best for which conditions but, generally, I advise at least starting with the two key gut flora strains – acidophilus and bifido – and that's what this range contains.

All Biocare probiotics in this range are dairy free since the bacteria are grown using chicory and the FOS in the actual product is also from chicory. The cellulose is from wood pulp, the stearate from palm oil. There is no carrageenan used in the capsule shells. All of this makes them really useful for sensitive people. (And, yes, I have hassled them terribly to find all that out, so thank you Biocare!)

There are several products in the Bio-Acidophilus range. They all contain the two key strains; the difference is in the strength. This standard one is 10 billion bacteria cells per capsule, Bioacidophilus Forte is 30 billion and Bioacidophilus Forte Plus contains a whopping 75 billion per capsule.

How much to take depends on what you are taking it for. It is always best to divide dose if you can so you get regular 'hits' if you like. Take at least 2 hours away from food/herbs etc although some people like taking them with food to aid digestion: see how you get on. In general, for adults, I would say the minimum is about 10 billion per day, more like minimum 30 billion if you have a suspect gut, inflammation or allergy present.

Ingredients: Bulking Agent (Cellulose), Fructooligosaccharides, Capsule Shell (Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose),, Lactobacillus acidophilus (CUL-60 & CUL-21), Anti-caking Agents (Silicon dioxide & Magnesium Stearate), Bifidobacterium bifidum (CUL-20) & Bifidobacterium lactis (CUL-34) Allergen warning: no allergens, vegan, vegetarian, suitable for children, breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women.

Nutrition Tip: Check Micki's factsheet on probiotics where you'll find other, more technical resources if you need them, and Biocare has a useful round-up of products too. You can also check out the other articles on probiotics here on the supplements site.

If you can't tolerate the Bio-Acidophilus, some people have to start right at the beginning again with baby bacteria seeded first. In this case, look at Bifido Infantis instead.

Biocare Bio-Acidophilus costs £20.90 for a bottle of 60 veg caps, and can be bought direct from Biocare's website, and from independent health food shops.
