Nut allergic children more likely to be sensitised to sesame seeds

Researchers at The Children’s Hospital Boston studying the medical records of over 200 children have found that those with allergies to tree nuts and peanuts are more likely to have a sensitisation to sesame seeds.

Coconut and sesame are emerging allergens in the US, and research published by Dr Wanda Phipatanakul and colleagues in the Journal of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology looked at the records of 191 children with positive skin prick tests to sesame and 40 with positive skin prick tests to coconut.

The children with histories of both tree nut and peanut reaction were more likely to have a reaction to sesame, but not to coconut.
