About Us

Foods Matter is an entirely independent informational website and allergy portal which has grew out of a monthly printed magazine.

The magazine was started some 20 years ago by Michelle Berriedale-Johnson, a food historian, food journalist and ex-caterer, whose small son was diagnosed with a dairy intolerance. She was so horrified at the quality of the few dairy-free foods on the market that she decided that she could do better herself.

However, back in the1990s the concept of 'free-from food' had yet to be born and after three years of struggling to get her products onto the market in economically viable quantities, she gave up the manufacture of 'free-from' foods and turned to writing about them. She has subsequently written ten books on food allergy/intolerance, edited Foods Matter and contributes regularly to a number of other magazines.

Foods Matter magazine started as a free quarterly going to around 35,000 health professionals dealing with food allergy and intolerance. In 2000 it became a subscription only, patient-support magazine with a readership of around 20,000.

At the end of 2009 the Foods Matter magazine ceased to exist - giving way to the Foods Matter site which had already grown to be a major portals for food allergy/intolerance.

The Foods Matter site

The Foods Matter site is totally free access. It supported entirely by its advertising revenue; it is not sponsored and does not accept advertorial promotions of any kind.

Foods Matter does not have a medical editorial board as it wishes to be able incorporate as many different approaches to allergy and intolerances as possible, some of which would be regarded as too cutting edge/wacky (depending on your stand point) for most medical boards.

However, we would emphasise that information on the site is not a substitute for medical advice and we can assume no liability for its use.
